The History

our story

The founder of Welsh’s Motel, Wesley C. Welsh, was born and raised in Wall, SD. He discovered an entrepreneurial spirit early in life and dreamed of opening his own business. Shortly after meeting his wife, Beverly Wheeler, the two decided to make that dream a reality. After relocating back to Wall from the “Big City” of Rapid City, the Welshs worked with Wesley’s parents to construct what would later become Welsh’s Motel on the grounds of the family grocery store, which was a staple for local residents at the time.

Welsh’s Motel opened its doors in 1958 as a truly family owned and operated venture, with Wes, his wife Beverly, and his parents Harold and Mary all contributing to its success. A third generation soon became part of the story as the Welshs welcomed four daughters over the years. Pride in ownership was always important to the family. “That name on the sign is yours,” Wes would often remind his girls, “and it should represent integrity and pride.”

The motel is now owned by the Welshs’ third daughter, Kelly Welsh, who continues her family’s multi‑generational legacy of offering a clean and comfortable stay to every guest.
